 The overall goals of this position are to:

1) Begin to address the upstream causes (inadequate income) and the downstream effects (poor health) of food insecurity by developing new, non-traditional partnerships that will connect food bank clients to health resources; and 

2) To strategically incorporate client voice into the work of the Texas Food Bank Network and the South Texas Food Bank through the implementation of a client empowerment/story banking initiative. 

 

In order to accomplish these goals the Health Partnership Organizer will:

Identify the needs of food bank clients in the community and available resources related to health and nutrition through the completion of a community assessment in partnership with organizations and community members.

Develop and strengthen partnerships in the area of health and nutrition by identifying and cultivating opportunities to collaborate on new programming or referrals, resource sharing, and/or developing shared trainings and materials.

Engage community members and clients in the client empowerment initiative by:

Gathering clients' input and stories thorough a statewide story banking initiative.

Recruiting clients and community members to participate in food bank client advisory groups.

Training food bank staff and community volunteers on client empowerment strategies and the story banking initiative to ensure the continuation of client empowerment and involvement upon completion of the VISTA program.

 

Program Benefits:

$928 Living allowance, paid monthly

Segal Education Award ($5,645) or End-of-Service stipend ($1,500) (Year position)

Convene community leaders and members to identify SNAP program barriers and develop a comprehensive plan to improve access in their communities.

Recruit, manage, and train community volunteers to conduct screening and application assistance and to develop SNAP program materials and application assistance materials along with related trainings to community-based organizations.

Identify and apply for non-federal sources of funds

Assist community and faith-based organizations and state agencies in decreasing barriers and improving access to USDA FNS’s SNAP Employment and Training (SNAP E&T) Program in order to help enable people eligible for SNAP to obtain employment and/or increase their wages, with the hope that someday they will no longer need SNAP benefits.
