HEB Delivers Rice to South Texas Food Bank
The South Texas Food Bank received a truck load of rice (39,600 pounds) from H-E-B to distribute to needy families, especially during this holiday season. LAREDO, TX- H-E-B has responded to the growing need for food this holiday season with
a special delivery to the South Texas Food Bank. On Wednesday, H-E-B
delivered a truckload of Own Brand rice (39,600 pounds), just in time to
help ensure all residents of Laredo enjoy a holiday meal.
Through Dec. 15, H-E-B will deploy a fleet of trucks throughout the state
to deliver rice and cereal to 15 food banks in Texas – 322,800 total
pounds, worth $250,000 – through its Food Bank Assistance Program. Each of
the 15 food banks are affiliated with Feeding America, the nation's
leading domestic hunger-relief organization
“Local food banks are seeing a significant increase in the need for food
among families and individuals, especially during the holidays,” said
Alfonso Casso, Jr., executive director of the South Texas Food Bank, based
in Laredo. “The families we serve are thankful for the continuing
commitment of H-E-B to our mission and to improving their quality of
life.”

food bank serves 24,000 families, 7,000 elderly, 500 veterans and their
widows and 6,000 children per month in an eight-county area from Rio
Grande City to Del Rio.
“Hunger prevention in the community is a core pillar for H-E-B, and has
been for more than 100 years,” said Linda Tovar, H-E-B Public Affairs
Manager. “In this challenging economic climate, now more than ever it is
important to support the food banks that help feed Texas families.”
The H-E-B Food Bank Assistance Program works year-round to raise awareness
and battle hunger in Texas and Mexico. The program was founded in 1982 and
is nationally recognized for the financial donations and regular monthly
deliveries of food it makes to food banks in Texas and Mexico. In total
for 2011, H-E-B will donate over 26 million pounds of food to Texas and
Mexico Food Banks, which represents 32.5 million meals.
