History: One late night in Savannah, Georgia, two hungry children were found in a community center kitchen; the older boy was giving fruit and milk to the younger one. In response, the Food Bank of Coastal Georgia launched the first charitable feeding program focused exclusively on needy children, the Kids Cafe. Within five years there were over 120 Kids Cafes located in forty cities across America. In 2000, the South Texas Food Bank partnered with the Laredo Housing Authority to open six Kids Cafes in Laredo, and a seventh this year. In 2006, the Food Bank opened three more sites in Rio Bravo, El Cenizo, and the Laredo Boys & Girls Club. Today, the Webb County Kids Café program serves 500 children every day.

How to help: The Kids Café is always looking for more healthy food and happy volunteers. For more information, contact Gloria Jackson at (956)-726-3120 or gjackson@southtexasfoodbank.org.
