Program Mission:
The mission of the BackPack Program is to help alleviate child hunger by providing hungry children with nutritious and easy to prepare food at time when other resources are not available such as weekends and holidays when school campuses are closed.
This program was first implemented in the Summer of 2016 with the support of The Guadalupe & Lilia Martinez Foundation.
This initiative was created as a response to children’s need for a reliable food source during occasions of food insecurity, which include but are not limited to:
-
Weekends
-
Holidays
-
Emergencies
The children receive backpacks with 10 lbs. (avg.) of nutritious, non-perishable easy-to-open food items that are easily and safely prepared.
Occasionally it will also include a 1 lb. bag of rice and beans, pastas, a couple of food cans (not too heavy for the child to carry) and other staple items that the child can share with his or her parents.
At the present time, there are no federal child nutrition programs to offset costs for Backpack Food Programs. Therefore, we rely on friends, churches, civic organizations, and companies that are willing to support this supplemental food program.
