After a brief hiatus, The South Texas Food Bank opened the doors of its facility for its annual Fall Health Jamaica on Friday, November 1, 2024, embracing a vibrant Dia de los Muertos theme in honor of the season. This beloved community event brought neighbors together in a lively and colorful atmosphere filled with joy, culture, health awareness and community support.
The fair served as a hub for health and wellness, with 12 community organizations who partnered with The South Texas Food Bank to offer valuable services and information. These services included health screenings, informational booths on various health topics, and on-site haircuts from Cro Cuts Corp. These services underscored the event’s mission of uplifting the community by addressing immediate needs and long-term wellbeing.
Attendees enjoyed a special performance from the Farias Elementary Dance Troupe and a range of festive games such as loteria, hook-a-duck, corn hole, “Pin the Flower on the Calavera” and a costume contest. These interactive activities provided a playful and family-friendly appeal to the event, keeping guests of all ages entertained throughout the evening.
Raffle prizes were a highlight at the Jamaica, with winners and attendees walking away with fun items like movie passes to the Alamo Drafthouse, vouchers to Jalapenos Pizza, fresh produce boxes, and even turkeys to help with upcoming holiday meals. These prizes not only delighted our guests but also helped spread cheer and gratitude.
In addition to the fun games, the event’s decor was a feast for the senses, showcasing vibrant florals, traditional papel picado banners, and a beautiful display of calaveras.
No celebration is complete without delicious food and entertainment, and the concession stand did not disappoint. Guests indulged in classic favorites like popcorn, nachos, hotdogs, and corn in a cup prepared by the food bank’s Scratch Kitchen. This added a flavorful addition to accompany guests as they enjoyed a lively cheer performance that embodied the communities spirit that evening.
Thanks to our partner organizations, performers, volunteers and community, the 35th Anniversary Health Jamaica was a resounding success - blending tradition, health awareness, and fun in a vibrant way. We look forward to bringing this cherished event back next fall.
