This summer, any child age 18 or younger can receive healthy meals at no cost by visiting one of our Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) meal sites.
Initiated by the Texas Department of Agriculture, the goal of the summer food program is to help build a healthier future across the state of Texas. By providing access to healthy meals throughout the summer, children will be nourished and ready to return to school in the fall.
Meal sites are managed by schools and nonprofit organizations, like the food bank, that partner with TDA to make these healthy meals available in the summer. Many sites offer enriching activities and serve warm meals.
Through SFSP, children and teenagers 18 years and younger, who are eligible, can receive a warm, delicious and nutritious meal at their nearest participating site. The meals are prepared fresh by the South Texas Food Bank’s Scratch Kitchen and provided daily from Monday through Friday. While previous summers have seen an average of 800 children per day, this summer is expected to reach more as new sites have been added to the program.
“The Summer break is especially challenging for children experiencing hunger because they no longer have regular access to the meals they’d receive at their schools,” said Alma Boubel, South Texas Food Bank CEO. “Our goal is to alleviate the issue along with the help of our partnered feeding sites.”
Families can choose one of the following ways to find a summer meal site:
